Lingcod Fishing in Alaska
When most people think about
fishing in Alaska, they consider standing along a mountain stream,
catching salmon that are swimming by, by the thousands. The fact of the
matter is, there are a lot of great ways for you to enjoy an Alaska
fishing vacation, one of them being lingcod fishing. If you have never
tried this particular sport, you would probably be surprised to find out
exactly how enjoyable it can be. Although you may not come the whole way
to the remote state of Alaska in order to enjoy this sport on its own, it
certainly is something that you should take into consideration if you are
here on another fishing vacation.
The lingcod is a fish that is found in North America along the West Coast,
the whole way up to the Gulf of Alaska. The largest lingcod on record that
was ever caught was well over 150 pounds. In Alaska, however, they are
typically maxed out at about 70 pounds although there are some larger
lingcod that are also available. Although this particular species spends a
lot of his life in the deep water, they will come closer to shore at
particular times of the year in order to spawn. They are not a migratory
fish so it is often necessary for you to wait until the spawning season to
really get in some great Alaska lingcod fishing.
If you plan on doing some lingcod fishing while you are in Alaska, you
should hire a guide service that will take you out on a charter boat.
There are plenty of these charter services that are available in Alaska
but during the spawning season, they do tend to be rather busy. If you are
planning on doing a little bit of this type of fishing whenever you are in
the state, you should make sure that you book your charter well in
advance. This will help you to make sure that you get the charter that you
desire and also that you will be able to get one at all whenever the fish
are in the area.
Not only will hiring a lingcod charter boat help you to get to where the
fish are, they will also be able to help you to have a safe day out on the
water. If you are not familiar with the Alaskan waters, they can be rather
treacherous. Make sure that you don't take on something like this on your
own and end up in trouble. Hire a charter service to get you out of the
water, get you the fish that you want and then get you home safely.
Regardless of why you are coming to Alaska, make sure that you book at
least one day in order to go out and lingcod fishing. It is sure to give
you a fishing experience that you will not soon forget and you might be
surprised with exactly how much of a fight this relatively unknown species
can give you.
