Southeast Alaska Halibut Fishing
The halibut is a species of
flounder that can only be found in in the North Pacific and North Atlantic
Oceans. That is why many people that are after the halibut come to Alaska
in order to fish for it. The cold Pacific waters offer the habitat what
this Fish needs. Many people regard the halibut to be the most important
food fish in the world, its name being derived from two different words
that stand for holy and flatfish. This is because many people eat this
type of fish on what they consider to be holy days.
Southeast Alaska halibut fishing is some of the best that you're going to
find anywhere in the world. This area is sometimes referred to as being
the Alaska panhandle and the entire western side of the territory touches
the Pacific Ocean so it gives you some excellent opportunities to charter
a boat and to get out for some great times on the ocean. Although coaxing
these large fish up off of the bottom can be a little bit difficult, an
experienced charter will be able to help get you in the proper areas and
to get you there with the right gear so that you have the best opportunity
to land one of these fish.
Although most of the halibut that you're going to catch in Southeast
Alaska will be in the 25 to 30 pound range, it certainly is possible for
you to catch halibut that are 100 pounds or more in weight. Some of the
females can even weigh up to 600 pounds which is an amazingly large fish.
That is another reason why it is always a good idea to have a charter boat
service take you out on the ocean because they are going to have the gear
that is necessary to help you land one of these larger fish should you get
it on the line.
A lot of people that go to Alaska on fishing vacations do so for
freshwater fish, such as rainbow trout or to catch the steelhead and
salmon whenever they are running. It is always a good idea to make sure
that you take a day or two in order to get out on the ocean and see if you
can catch some of these trophy fish as well. If you happen to land one of
the larger fish that is typically caught by one of these charters, you
will end up with quite a fight on your hands and something that you will
remember for a very long time.
Most of the spawning activity that takes place for halibut takes place
during the winter months, generally from December through February. This
does not typically correspond with any of the freshwater fishing that is
going to take place so it is either good to schedule a trip specifically
for halibut fishing or to try getting out on the water, even if they are
not running at that particular time.
