Southeast Alaska Fishing
Southeast Alaska which is
sometimes referred to as the inside passage or more commonly as the
Alaskan panhandle. It is the home to be Alaskan state capital, Juneau as
well as several well-known national parks, such as Glacier Bay National
Park. The area is a relatively thin strip of land that is bordered on two
sides by British Columbia and the Pacific Ocean. Because most of the area
of southeast Alaska is bordered on the Pacific Ocean, it gives some
excellent fishing opportunities to those that want to travel to this part
of the state.
Something that is interesting about Southeast Alaska is the fact that it
is actually a rain forest. When most people think about rain forest, they
think about tropical climates which is far from what Southeast Alaska
provides. The fact that it is a temperate rain forest, however, simply
means that it receives a large amount of annual rainfall which puts it
into this category. Because of that rainfall along with the many glaciers
that are in the area, the landscape has been cut quite interestingly and
it provides a lot of streams and rivers that flow to the Pacific Ocean.
This gives anglers a good opportunity to catch salmon and steelhead
whenever they are running.
Something that Southeast Alaska is well-known for as far as fishing is
concerned is halibut fishing. These are ocean running fish that average
anywhere from 25 to 30 pounds in size, which can give you quite a fight.
Many people, however, tend to go for the larger halibut that can reach
weights as much as 600 pounds. Most of the larger halibut that are caught
on the charter boats tend to be around 100 pounds or so but there have
been several catches of halibut that were 250 to 350 pounds in size.
Something else that Southeast Alaska is well-known for his salmon fishing.
As a matter of fact, the salmon fishing in Southeast Alaska is some of the
best that you are going to find in the world. One of the reasons why this
is the case is because it is the warmest area in Alaska, mostly because of
the warm water in the area and because of the annual rainfall that tends
to come off of the Gulf of Alaska.
Although there is a somewhat established road system in Southeast Alaska,
much of the transportation that takes place is as a result of either boat
or airplane. This is even the case when it comes to the state's capital as
there are very few roads that pass in and out of this area. While you're
in Southeast Alaska enjoying your fishing vacation, make sure that you
take in some of the other sites and perhaps even enjoy some time at one of
the national parks. It is one of the most beautiful areas of the world and
you are sure to have a vacation that you will enjoy remembering for the
rest of your life.
