Southwest Alaska Flyfishing
One of the most enjoyable ways of
fishing is by using an artificial lure, known as a fly. Fly fishing has
been done for thousands of years and some people will only fish in this
way whenever they are trying to catch certain species. Whenever you come
to Alaska, you have the opportunity to get in some of the best flyfishing
that is available, anywhere in the world. The reason why this is the case
is because of the native rainbow trout, steelhead and salmon that tend to
inhabit these waters.
Of course, you would be able to fly fish in almost any part of Alaska with
success but if you're really looking for some action, Southwest Alaska
flyfishing offers you almost nonstop fishing whenever the salmon and
steelhead are running. During season, Southwest Alaska produces some of
the largest salmon runs that can be found anywhere in the world and with a
little bit of experience under your belt, you will have a hard time
keeping them off of your line.
Most people that fly fish tend to like to tie their own lures, at least to
a certain extent. Although there are already thousands of different fly
designs in existence, it is always interesting whenever you are able to
design one of your own and use it with success. The two main types of lies
that are used are either a dry fly which floats on top of the water, meant
to look as if it were an insect or a wet fly which travels underneath the
surface of the water, mimicking a small bait fish. You can successfully
fish in Alaska with either of these flies and some of the salmon are going
to bite on almost anything that you put in front of their face. Some of
the fish, however, tend to get a little bit line leary after they have
been caught a few times so you may enjoy testing your skills with these as
well.
Although it is possible for you to take yourself out to do a little bit of
flyfishing in Southwest Alaska, the area tends to be rather remote and it
can be difficult to find your way around. Because this part of the state
is rather sparsely populated, most of the traveling that takes place in
this territory is either by airplane or helicopter. A guide service will
be able to fly you into areas of Southwest Alaska where very few people
are ever able to go. Because they understand how the fish run and where
the spawning takes place, they are able to get you to the action and let
you catch as many fish as possible.
It doesn't matter if you
have been flyfishing for a very long time or if you would just like to try
it for the first time, hiring a good guide service to take you into these
areas is the best way for you to make sure that you enjoy yourself on your
fishing vacation.
