Southwest Alaska Fishing

When most people think about Southwest Alaska, they consider it to be mainly a coastal region. To be certain, the entire area of southwest Alaska is contained for the most part in a peninsula that was formed by a series of volcanoes. This gives it a coast on either side and makes it an excellent choice if you plan on doing some ocean fishing whenever you are in the state.

Just because the focus of southwest Alaska fishing ends up in the oceans does not necessarily mean that it is without action for those that enjoy freshwater fishing as well. There are plenty of rivers that run through southwest Alaska which include the Kuskokwim River, Kvichak River, Newhalen River and the Yukon River. If you prefer to do some like fishing, there are also several lakes that are within the region including Lake Clark, Becharof Lake and Naknek Lake. Along with these main waterways, there are plenty of backwoods streams and areas that are available for some great fishing and almost untouched by human hands.

Some of the freshwater fishing that is done in southwest Alaska includes rainbow trout, salmon fishing and steelhead whenever they are running. The ocean fishing gives you the opportunity to catch a variety of different fish but many people enjoy going out for halibut because they are relatively unique to this area of the world.

This area of the state is widely unpopulated, much like the rest of Alaska but only 1/10 of the Alaskan population actually resides in the Southwest territory. Although it is a relatively small part of the state in comparison with the others, there is a lot of natural beauty and areas that can be accessed via plane or helicopter in order to really get you out into the wilderness. Of course, you are going to need to hire a guide service in order to get you out into these remote areas but it will be well worth the effort whenever you're standing in a spot where very few humans have ever stood.

Another reason why you would want to have a guide service whenever your fishing in southwest Alaska is because this is an extreme wilderness region and you would certainly not want to go out into it if you were unprepared or lacked knowledge of the region. Not only is the guide service going to be able to get you out where there is some great fishing, they are also going to be able to ensure your safety from things such as grizzly bears and the weather which can come up rather unexpectedly.

Although it certainly is possible the fish in any area of Alaska, southwest Alaska offers some remote fishing opportunities and great charter boat day trips that can get you to where the action is. It is one of the best ways for you to enjoy your Alaska fishing vacation without having to fly into an extreme remote area.
