Southwest Alaska Salmon Fishing

Salmon fishing is considered by many to be one of the most enjoyable fresh water sports fishing activities that is available. Unfortunately, salmon fishing is on the decline in many parts of the world because of overfishing, overpopulation of humans and pollution of the water. Fortunately, Alaska still offers some salmon fishing that is unbelievable and much of the area in which this fishing is done is relatively untouched. This is particularly the case when it comes to Southwest Alaska salmon fishing, something that will give you a sports fishing trip like you had never imagined.

Although most people consider the Southwest Alaska region to be more open for ocean fishing because of it being a peninsula, the fact of the matter is that there is a lot of open country and wilderness available for you to do some freshwater fishing as well. The salmon runs that happen in southwest Alaska are some of the greatest that happened anywhere in the world. You will be able to find all five of the species of Pacific salmon available whenever you are out in this territory.

If you plan on doing some salmon fishing in southwest Alaska, and if you want to fill your freezers back home with fish, you better make sure that you have a great guide service by your side. The reason why this is the case is because much of the area of southwest Alaska is a wilderness and there are very few roads that interconnect the populated areas. As a matter of fact, the entire Southwest Alaska region only has a population of a little over 50,000 and the roadways that interconnect the various populous areas are sparse, at best. Much of the transportation that takes part in this area of Alaska is by plane or helicopter.

The good news about this is that a good guide service is going to be able to take you to areas of southwest Alaska that are almost entirely untouched by human hands. Because of the great salmon runs that occur in this area, it is not uncommon for you to meet up with brown bear and grizzly bear who are also waiting for a good catch. The guide service will be able to help you to find these animals, not only for you to be able to see them but so that you don't have to be constantly looking over your shoulder whenever you are salmon fishing.

You can either fish for salmon with bait or you can use a fly rod in order to be a little bit more sporting. Most people that come to Alaska in order to fish for salmon like to at least try their hand at some flyfishing and a guide service will be able to help you, regardless if you have been flyfishing for a long time or if you're just starting out. One thing that is certain, however, once you get one of these large fish on the end of your line you are going to be in for the fight of your life.
