Steelhead Fishing in Alaska

Trout fishing is some of the most enjoyable fishing that you will ever do and people come from all over the world in order to enjoy some of the native trout fishing that takes place in Alaska. Although rainbow trout fishing is by far the most popular type that takes place in the state, steelhead fishing is also a very popular sport and some people make the journey just to enjoy this type of fishing whenever they are spawning.

Most people are not aware of the fact that rainbow trout and steelhead are actually the same fish. The primary difference between these two fish is that rainbow trout will stay in freshwater for their entire life but steelhead will travel out into the salt water for a year or more before running back into the fresh water in order to spawn. Unlike salmon which are also a very popular fish in the state of Alaska, steelhead and rainbow trout will spawn several times before they end up dying. It is also possible for rainbow trout and steelhead to interbreed with each other whenever they are spawning. In this way, it is possible for a rainbow trout to produce fish that travel out into the salt water and for steelhead to produce fish that stay in the fresh water.

Steelhead are also different in the way that they look in comparison with the rainbow trout. They tend to be more silvery in color and they lack the brilliant stripe that travels along the side of the rainbow trout. They are also larger and may grow up to 48 inches long and reach 22 pounds. One thing's for certain, whenever you get a steelhead on the end of your line, you are in for a fantastic fight. They will jump, twist and do everything that they possibly can in order to get off the end of the line, something that most fishermen enjoy watching while it is taking place.

A good guide service will be able to take you to waters where the steelhead are running so that you can get the most action. They will also be there to protect you and to guide you through some of this wilderness so that you do not run into any unfriendly animals along the way. Most of all, they will be able to give you advice and to help you so that you can catch the most steelhead as you possibly can. It is said that steelhead will eat almost anything but they become rather line leery after they have been caught a couple of times.

Steelhead fishing in Alaska is somewhat of a tradition for many people and no fishing Alaska trip should overlook the possibility of going after this fish while they are running. It is some of the most enjoyable fishing that you will take part in and it takes place in some of the most beautiful settings that are to be found in the world.
